  1. Today, I was there in the morning assembly and I heard the keynote speaker from Palau(MOE) and I liked the way he talked about maintaining our language and culture and talking about first members/leaders of PIBBA and I also went into your presentation but was there for about 5 or 7 minutes. I saw on the wall clock that I have only 40 minutes before class and I left. Sorry!

  2. Good afternoon!I went to the conference and attended Dr.Ferrel presentation. It was fun and interesting in doing the activities that she prepare. Some of us were used as her modeling of the different strategies in teaching second language learners. The other people was very exciting in learning different tecniques of teaching. I really enjoy her presentation which is clear, precise, and interesting. Students will love to learn if the teachers intergrate dance, music, and drama in their teaching. My special thanks to Dr. Ferrel.

  3. Good morning Dr. Rivera, yesterday I attended the sessions in the afternoon. The title of the presentation was "values behind proverbs" and it was presented by Mr. Tony Sarapio. Many people attended this session so I had to stand outside the room and listened to the presentation. I Strongly agree with what he presented because it is true that we are ignoring or no longer value our culture. This is very sad because we are now valuing something that is not ours, like money and etc... I learned that we need to keep/value our culture because it belongs to us and we belong to it. Without it, there is no Pohnpeian, no fsm, or no micronesian. It is what we have and what shows who we are. The activity for this presentation, shows that we(especially Pohnpeians) are now neglecting the value of our culture because most of the proverbs that that were brought up from each group, almost all the young people in the session don't know the meaning of them. I think that it is best if i start introducing some proverbs in the classroom. Thank you.

  4. I attended Dr. Ferrer's Presentation on Sheltering Techniques. She presented some of the ways that teachers can use to teach ESL to students. Those techniques would be helpful in teaching students. What I like the most from the sheltering techniques is the incorporation of music and drama into the lesson. This would make students remember more on what they learned as they would be singing about the lesson and even acting it out. Music and drama could be one way to accommodate the diversity of learners in the classrooms. The assessment part of using music and drama in the lesson could be to make a checklist for scoring participation of students and whether what they sing or do is correct. This would provide immediate feedback to students.

  5. Sheltering Techniques was the title of the presentation that I attended and was delivered by the one and only Dr. Ferrer. I was glad to be there for I learned new techniques for teaching ESL students which is very relevant to any Pohnpeian teacher. Only 2 of the techniques that really interest me, and they are Modeling and Bridging. I believe that instead of having students to write the different endpoints of sentences, I could have students to model out or use their bodies to show me how to write a period, exclamation mark, and a question mark. I believe that children would like this way better. As for the bridging, it gives me an insight on how to carry out what I had learned from Mr. Kihleng previously which is teaching students to read and then move on to reading to learn. I could use the bridging technique to transfer my students from learning to read to reading to learn. Lastly, the Wednesday's presentation was refreshing and it gives me hope after learning the new ways. Now I have more confidence to believe that next years results of the Reading Assessment will be better. Thank you for providing us the opportunity to join this year's PIBBA conference.

  6. Hello everyone,
Yesterday, I attended Dr. Ferer's presentation on "Sheltering Techniques". Her presentation composed of some important elements that needs to be considered when teaching our students. She talked about the using of KWL charts which can be used to foster student's learning a step at a time. In my opinion, this technique is an essential technique to consider when a teacher is to really monitor the learning's of his or her students. I believe that such strategy of teaching itself is an assessment instrument that a teacher could utilize in his or her lesson evaluations. Another important element of "Sheltering Technique" Dr. Ferer shared yesterday was the integration of songs to teach our students. By having our students learn songs that contains some of the important facts of a particular lesson in the song, it could really assist our students to remember the content of that particular lesson when it comes to their assessment date. Dr. Ferer also talked about role playing as one of the elements of her "Sheltering technique". From my own point of view, I strongly believe that by utilizing this technique it could also really help our students to be able to remember key ideas of a particular lesson and be able to surpass any assessment or evaluation materials that may or should be given to them. Last but not the least, is the tigzaw technique that she also shared with her crowd. This technique allow students to master their assigned tasks and be able to share it with their peers. Incorporating this technique in a lesson could be utilized to set our students up to be able to pass any assessments or evaluation that may be set up to assess the student after any particular lesson in any subject area. All in all, I strongly believe and would be looking forward to incorporating these "Sheltering Techniques" in my lesson deliveries because I've now realized it's important purpose of enabling all students to understand the subject matter being they are to be tested on. Kalahngan and Kaselehlie.

  8. I attended Dr. Ferrer's session on sheltering techniques for second language learners. These techniques are very effective in using for the evaluation of students learning. For example, it is very observable if we test our students to role play a story. I can tell if they understand the story or not. The sheltering techniques are good for assessing students who are second language learners. Not just because they learn by words, but they can use songs, role-playing, displacement method, and modeling. These strategies are very useful and effective in assessing students and most importantly it is very observable.

  9. I attended Dr.Ferrer's session yesterday on sheltering techniques. It was a very resourceful and important presentation based on how second language learner's should understand? It was interesting and one of the things I learned about is modeling. Modeling is always important anywhere and anytime when teaching or in the classroom. I learned a lot of things that are very important to seconding language learners in the sheltering technique presentation.

  10. Hello, Dr.Rivera

I attended both sessions. The morning session was a survey by Dr.Polamo and Mr. Reflong. Their survey was about the "Numerical System". They were researching this in the pacific islands. This survey reminisce me about counting things in many different ways. And the afternoon session was about the "Parents as Educators" by Evelyn Joseph from Prel. These two sessions was important. So by lacking off their cultural activities, we can evaluate the each students from observing them. Anyway, it was interesting to learn many new ideas.
