  2. Good morning Dr. Rivera,
Yesterday I got the pibba conference site at 2 o'clock and I noticed that the sessions were about to start. First, I went to attend a session that was conducted by Mr. Saped Santos. This presentation is about animals as time teller. I wanted to attend this presentation but it was very crowded so I decide to look for another session. I got into a session that was conducted by Mr. Linter Kihleng where I met some of my colleagues. The presentation was short but there were some interesting things he mentioned. This presentation focused on a reading assessment that the PDOE administered to 3rd graders in Pohnpei starting from year 2008 - 2011. The data that was collected shows that 36 % of student are in the advance and proficiency level in 2008. Then in 2009, it dropped to 34%, and in 2010, it goes back up to 35%, and for 2011, they're still working on the data that was collected and if the data will come out with the same result, then there must be something wrong with the curriculum. (For this matter, I think that maybe communication is what causes the problem. The PDOE specialists and teachers need to work together so that what is in the curriculum and the assessments can be valid. For example, the SBA assessment that they just administered to the 3rd graders, I think that the assessment was not valid because some of the contents of the assessment was not in the curriculum).
When the session was finished, I went to a session that was still in progress. It was conducted by Mr. Hermino Tihpen and it was based on promoting economic and welfare in our traditional ways. They presented 3 levels of words of Pohnpei (common words, loyal words, and honorific words). How can we learn and use these in classrooms? (These could be done or integrated in the subject areas like language arts, math, social studies, science, Pohnpei studies, and even in PE. Lower grades can use the first level (common words) the middle grades (loyal words), and the upper grades (honorific words). They can be given a situatrion to model, role play, etc... using the 3 level words.

  3. I went to the pibba conference sessions and I found some strategies to use for evaluating students learning and also creativity as well. This can be used by evaluating the students understanding of using objects that are dispose and make them useful again. This can fall under the self-0evaluation strategy.

  5. Fist Language Literacy presented by Mr. Kihleng. From his presentation, it's obvious to see that most of it is about the importance of reading in learning and the assessment parts of reading for checking understanding. He begins his presentation with a quote about a conducted research on reading. Students would have to first know how to read before they do encoding skills. Therefore,to be successful, the first language would have to be mastered before using other languages. Using his presentation in how i teach would be throughout elementary school years. That is teaching the local or first language in all grades level at the elementary level from grade 1-8. Mastering the first language would help or make reading comprehension of a second language (English) easier. Learning to read would have to be learned as early as first grade or can be earlier (by parents). This would help students for a successful future in their studies.

  6. The session I attended yesterday was called VLO on Pohnpei Curriculum Strategic Goals by Linter Kihleng. From his presentation, I've come to realize that what I have been doing in Language Arts need to be modified. Another thing I learned is to first create a bridge for my students to cross over from learning to read to reading to learn to ensure effective comprehension. So with this in mind, I must make sure to have assessment tools to measure that my students can not only read but to understand what has been read to them or by them. A Reading program entitled the "Distrip" was recommended to use in the local classrooms. Last but not the least, it is important to ensure that students can read and comprehend their own language before reading and comprehending another language.

  7. Yesterday, I wasn't able to attend any sessions but luckily I was able to spent some quality time with the PIBBA president touring Kolonia Town in one of the Minivans. The important thing I learned form Honorable Neth is that to be able to coordinate a big event like the PIBBA Conference, one has to make sacrifices and put quality efforts in their committment to serve the needs of the quests and participants bilingually and biculturally. After our little cruise, I also attended the cultural presentations which was started out by Dr. Rivera's speech which I personally thought captivated everyone's attention and interest in the education field. From the speech, I realized that one's language and culture is his or hers identification in this world and no matter what is done it(e.g. molded, stepped on or etc.), it's value is still the same and it cannot be changed. The explanation of that concept was done with a twenty dollar bill and it really turned on some insights from the participants as I observed. The cultural presentation was full of fun activities and important messages that could really help any educator equip themselves with in teaching their students. I learned that Palauans have their own chants when they visit villages in Palau. Another important and exciting experieces that I also experienced yerterday evening was the bondage between strangers when they enjoy and have fun together as one. I really enjoyed the evening activities yesterday. Thank you and Kalahngan.

  9. Hello, Dr. Rivera
I attended the morning session. the session is about science "Climate Change and Traditional Knowledge" so we discussed four words(precipitation, wind, cloud and temperature). I think that as a teacher, we need to evaluate the students from what they know from their community or their culture. to this they will learn both the tradition and the English at the same time. because of the modernization not just the climate change but also the language and the culture.
